Great Lever Connected (GLC) is a community-driven organisation aimed at fostering connections and creating opportunities within the Great Lever area. We focus on enhancing social cohesion, supporting local development, and providing resources or programs to empower residents. We work to address local needs, celebrate cultural diversity, and encourage active participation from the community.
Over the years, we have forged relationships with several organisations and work very closely with the social housing providers within the borough of Bolton. In 2023, we said a final farewell to our original premises and relocated to a larger shared premises at Slaterfield Community Centre, where we now run our indoor sessions. In a typical week, we run or assist with 13 sessions across 5 days at Slaterfield and 7 days a week at the Eco Haven. Formed initially in 2013, GLC was created when several community groups came together to manage their own premises, and a committee was created to oversee the running of the property and manage the finances etc. In 2016, we acquired access to an allotment area which was being neglected, and over the years, we have transformed this into the Eco Haven. This outside area is used to grow vegetables and fruit, which is then distributed to the community. We also hold outside events such as BBQs and garden parties, along with workshops such as beekeeping, willow weaving and Wood whittling. The upkeep of the Eco Haven is a continuous process that requires a huge commitment from our volunteers who are dedicated to this outdoor space.
At our AGM each year, we elect a committee of up to 12 people, which includes a Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and a Secretary. We currently have a committee of seven; one of the members has been with GLC since its inception. GLC is a completely voluntary-run group, and we have a further 15 volunteers who keep our sessions running. They dedicate their free time to helping the community and seek no reward or favour for their efforts.
